Swim inside the reef
A natural volcanic reef, La Barra, runs parallel to much of the beach and calms the water behind it. That makes the central stretch a comfortable swim for families and for anyone who wants sea rather than surf.
Walk the promenade end to end
The paseo runs the length of the beach, past kiosks, cafés and terraces. Early morning and the hour before sunset are the best times — the light is low and the promenade belongs to walkers, runners and swimmers rather than sunbathers.
Surf the northern end
Where the reef opens up, the waves reach the shore and the beach becomes a surf spot. Check the live conditions on our Surf & Sea page before you carry a board down.
Eat where the city eats
Between the beach and La Isleta you will find neighbourhood bars and seafood places rather than resort restaurants. Cooking at home is easy too: the covered outdoor kitchen and rooftop dining tables handle a group of thirteen, and the supermarket is around the corner.
