Surfing in Las Palmas

Las Palmas sits on the Atlantic side of Gran Canaria, so the city gets real ocean swell within walking distance of where you sleep. Mahalo Holiday House is not a surf camp or a surf school โ€” it is a private house that happens to be a very convenient base for a surf trip.

Reading the conditions

Four numbers decide your session: wave height, swell period, swell direction and wind. A longer period usually means better-organised waves; onshore wind flattens and disorders them. Our Surf & Sea page pulls live marine data for the waters off Las Palmas, plus a multi-day forecast, so you can plan the morning the night before.

Water temperature in the Canaries stays moderate year-round, which is why the Atlantic here is surfable in every season โ€” bring a thin wetsuit rather than a winter one.

Where people surf

The northern end of Las Canteras, where the reef stops shielding the bay, is the closest and most-used stretch. Other spots around the island work on different swell and wind directions, so a rental car opens options when Las Palmas is flat or blown out.

Practicalities for a surf group

The house takes up to thirteen guests, which fits a group of friends or a mixed group of surfers and non-surfers. There is an outdoor shower for rinsing off, a rooftop terrace for drying kit, mini fridges in the bedrooms and refrigerators on the terrace.

For lessons, board rental and guiding, use one of the established local schools โ€” we are happy to point you towards the neighbourhood, but we do not run surf instruction ourselves.
